About
Meet Matthew De Haan, Psy.D.
About Me
I am a Christian who has wrestled with my faith and who has come to a deep and meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. I experienced the sting of death and grief at an early age, and I have suffered injuries that limit my ability to engage in activities I once enjoyed. Yet while my family has faced many challenges, I continually find comfort and strength in my personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Today, I am serving as a counselor online. I am married with four children, and when I am not counseling or teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family and being active outdoors.
My personal interests involve reading, hiking, and watching and playing sports. I have lived in a number of geographical locations throughout my life, and I am excited to now call Seattle home. The most important things to me are my faith and my family, which have supported and sustained me through some of the most challenging experiences of my life.
I chose to become a Christian counselor because I know that conflict and pain are inevitable in a world corrupted by sin. I feel called by God to help others know that healing is possible and that God will never give us more than we can handle. I believe that God has uniquely designed and equipped me to help facilitate renewal in peoples’ lives for those times when they may need help.
My Qualifications
& Work Experience
I received my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D) from Azusa Pacific University in 2011. Prior to that I studied History at Dordt College and earned my MA in Psychology at Azusa Pacific University. I have been formally counseling now for over five years in a number of professional capacities. I have been practicing as a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Washington since May of 2013. As a counselor I have helped people address a range of issues from anxiety and mood disorders to relationship concerns to faith crises and everything in between. In my work, I have developed particular interest in men’s issues, grief and loss, and interpersonal relationships.
Approach
In my practice as a counselor, I believe that relationships are both formative and transformative. Most people find a connection between their relationships and the struggles they experience in their lives. Therefore, I approach counseling from an interpersonal perspective. In our sessions together, I will ask questions about your past and current relationships and their contribution to the issues that bring you to therapy. Where appropriate, I also incorporate cognitive-behavioral techniques in my practice. In addition to our time directly together, you may also be asked to complete homework between sessions in order to provide continuity between sessions.
Our Sessions
what you can expect
in our sessions
Each of us is on a unique journey in life, and we all have a story to tell. Sometimes the path we walk is smooth and steady, but all of us from time to time experience unexpected challenges, turns, and conditions that leave us in need of help. In those moments of trial, counseling offers a remarkable opportunity to find rest, renew your strength and enable personal growth.
For many years, it was assumed in the counseling field that the only way to truly offer help to others was to maintain a “blank slate” approach and the supreme goal of therapy was to be as objective as possible. What we as a field have come to understand over the years is that none of us can ever be completely objective. I believe it is most honest to say that as individuals, we all come into situations with our own sets of experiences and background that shape who we are and give us our subjective perspective.
As a Christian, I know that every journey is different. I also know that the same God who created and sustains the universe created each one of us and has a plan for each of our lives. As a licensed clinical psychologist with many years of professional counseling experience, I offer you a safe, non-judgmental space to process your journey and to discover God’s plan for your life. Whatever issues you may be facing, I would be delighted to partner with you to foster healing and wholeness in your life.
Since each of my clients has a unique story and a unique set of needs, the specific goals for our sessions together depends on what you seek to gain from counseling. Having said that, I believe that the goal for any Christian counselor is to empower others to live life in the freedom that comes from God. This means that together we will pursue healing, wisdom, and discernment for your life. My aim is to help you achieve greater levels of functioning so that you can be freed from the pain or confusion that keeps you from living life to the fullest.
Having worked as a counselor for many years now, I can offer you complete confidence and competence as a therapist. Above all, I firmly believe that counseling should be collaborative and relational, that each person is the handiwork of God, and that true healing comes from the work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, I offer collaborative partnership and professional insight coupled with empathy, respect, and Biblical understanding.
